Let's Collab!
The discussion topic comparing group projects to collaborative authorship and design in a web 2.0 environment really made me think. There of course is a huge difference. In my experience, group projects are rarely truly done in a group. Individuals work on their part and then combine them at the end. Sometimes you never even meet as a group. Social sites are all collaborative in some way. You collaborate by sharing, and reposting. Creating memes can be seen as collaborative, because usually you are building upon another piece of media and/or using phrases others have said online. Going viral is collaborative.
When YouTubers were popular, the best way to ensure that they had a big video and reached wider audiences was to collab with other Youtubers. Overall, I don't think social media works as effectively if there is no collaboration.
